Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and other world leaders are taking part in celebrations in France on Thursday, June 6, to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, one of the most important Allied operations of World War II.
When the Allies captured several beachheads on France's Normandy coast on June 6, 1944, they could launch an offensive in Europe, squeeze German forces on the Western Front and open the way to Nazi Germany. France will commemorate the 80th anniversary of this event over three days, June 5-7. French President Emmanuel Macron is gathering world leaders on the Normandy coast on June 6. Not far from one of the landing pads in the American sector of Omaha Beach, in the city of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, memorial events will be held. The King of Great Britain Charles III, the President of the United States Joe Biden, the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi were invited to the celebration.
During similar events marking the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings in 2014, the so-called Normandy format was launched, this event takes place exactly ten years later. Through the mediation of Germany and France, Russia was unable to intervene in its war against Ukraine. For more than two years, Russia has been waging a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Official Paris did not invite Russia to the celebrations this year. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president is expected to hold a series of important meetings on the sidelines of official events for the 80th anniversary of Normandy.
Currently, it is known that Zelensky will hold a bilateral meeting with Macron in France on June 7. At this meeting, Macron is expected to officially announce Paris' plans to host French instructors in Ukraine. In addition, during his meeting with French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecorne, Zelensky will visit the plant of the KNDS arms group near Paris, where artillery ammunition is manufactured for Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Joe Biden will also hold a meeting on the Normandy grounds, the White House confirmed. The US president combined his trip to Normandy with his first state visit to France, the main part of which will take place on June 8.
Ahead of multiple summits, including with G7 and NATO leaders, talks between Macron and Biden are likely to focus on Russia's war against Ukraine.
