1. Firebrand

The film «Firebrand», adapted from Elizabeth Fremantle's 2013 novel «Queen's Gambit», diverges from the numerous cinematic portrayals of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn by focusing on his sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr. Featuring Alicia Vikander as Catherine Parr and Jude Law as an increasingly repugnant Henry VIII, the film explores the intricate courtly machinations and conspiracies that surround Parr as she navigates the perilous dynamics of the Tudor court. Phil de Semlyen of Time Out describes «Firebrand» as «a taut historical thriller, bathed in muted, Rembrandt-esque lighting and filled with viperish conspiracies and courtly colour», highlighting that the film «always catches fire when the supercharged Law is on screen». The film is scheduled for release in the United States on June 14.

2. A Quiet Place: Day One

John Krasinski's film «A Quiet Place» focused on a family hiding in a farmhouse from ravenous aliens. The sequel depicted the family venturing into the countryside. In the prequel, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, who previously directed «Pig» with Nicolas Cage, the narrative explores the initial chaos caused by the monsters' arrival from space in New York City. Lupita Nyong'o stars alongside Djimon Hounsou, who reprises his role from «A Quiet Place: Part Two». Sarnoski shared with Nick Romano in Entertainment Weekly, «It came back to something I loved about the first two films. Yes, these are monster films, they're horror-thriller movies that have these exciting, scary moments, but at their core, they're stories about people dealing with something that they don't know how to deal with. I wanted to focus on that but in its own unique way». The film is set for general release on 27 June.

3. The Bikeriders

The cast of The Bikeriders, which includes Tom Hardy, Austin Butler (Elvis), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), and Mike Faist (Challengers), is one of the best this year. In the 1960s, Hardy portrays Johnny, the creator of the Vandals MC, a Chicago motorcycle organization. As the group dressed in denim and leather begins to spend more time fighting than driving Harley Davidsons, the wife of one of the Vandals, Butler, (Comer), hopes that her husband will discover a new passion before it's too late. «An absorbing drama with echoes of great mob pictures such as Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas» is how Brian Viner of the Daily Mail describes Jeff Nichols' film. «As in those mob narratives [the characters] are rogues and rascals, yet we find ourselves rooting for them, especially in the case of Kathy's ineffably cool, incomparably laid-back, infuriatingly laconic husband Benny (Butler), to whom Johnny...wishes to pass his crown». Released on 21 June in the US, the UK, Canada and Ireland.

4. The Watchers

In this gripping supernatural mystery thriller, Dakota Fanning becomes an artist who becomes stranded in an Irish wilderness. When she and the other three escape from a monster, they discover that they are all trapped in a bunker where they must wait to be examined by the invisible alien «watchers» every night in front of a glass screen. The Watchers, which is based on AM Shine's novel, has a lot of the sound effects of a M Night Shyamalan movie. In fact, Ishana Night Shyamalan, the director, wrote and directed the picture. «His training has been a part of my life for the entire time» Shyamalan Jr. stated to Christina Radish in Collider. «The first 22 years of my existence were spent in this state of calm observation, observing [him] as he went along and noting his feelings at each stage. I make frequent use of that information while working on it». On general release from 7 June.
