On December 21, there will be a rematch between the absolute world champion in super heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, as reported by the head of the General Directorate of Entertainment of Saudi Arabia.
Usyk defeated Fury by split decision on May 18, becoming the first absolute champion in the four-belt era. Initially, the rematch was planned for October, but Turki Alalshikh announced the postponement of the fight to December. He noted that the fight will be another historic event and confirmed the commitment of the organizers to boxing fans.
Oleksandr Usyk, who became the first heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999, added Fury's WBC belt to his WBA, WBO and IBF titles when they fought in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The 37-year-old Ukrainian has won all 22 of his professional fights.
Alalshikh did not specify the venue of the rematch, but noted that it will take place as part of the Riyadh Season entertainment festival, which has been held every winter since 2019 and includes numerous boxing events. This fight will give the 35-year-old British Fury a chance for revenge after the first defeat in his 16-year professional career. At the same time, it is unlikely that all four belts will be on the line, as the IBF is slated to strip Usyk of his title due to his inability to make a mandatory defense against their challenger.
Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury reached an agreement to hold two fights, although there are still some doubts about the possibility of a rematch. However, given Alalshih's statement, which is quite authoritative, it can be expected that these competitions will indeed take place in Saudi Arabia during the winter holidays. The first meeting between the boxers met the expectations of the fans. Despite the predictions of experts, who predicted a technical and less dynamic fight, this match was marked by drama and active actions from both sides.
Considered one of the most intelligent boxers in the history of the sport, Usyk impresses with his ability to analyze and adapt during a fight. Having spent 12 rounds with Fury, Usyk seeks to achieve a more convincing victory.
Fury showed control over the fight in the first half, and he believes that with the right adjustments he can become a three-time world champion. If Usyk is forced to relinquish the IBF title, promoter Eddie Hearn has suggested the winner of the Filip Hrgovic-Daniel Dubois clash in Riyadh could face Anthony Joshua for the vacant belt in September at Wembley Stadium.
If Fury wins over Usyk, and if Joshua wins the IBF title, a fight between Fury and Joshua could take place in 2025 for all the championship belts.
